ABOUT
FLORIDA CITRUS MUTUAL
Formed in 1948, Florida Citrus Mutual is the state’s largest trade association dedicated solely to the well-being of the Florida citrus grower. Florida Citrus Mutual has thrived for more than 75 years now because growers, shippers and processors have come together to protect and enhance the future of our grower members.
IN THE SUNSHINE STATE
CITRUS
In the late 1940s, Florida’s citrus industry was experiencing severe market fluctuations. Citrus prices did not cover the cost of production, and growers were losing money. The Citrus Exchange determined that the industry needed an organization dedicated to stabilizing prices.
The idea for Florida Citrus Mutual was born. With the support of several key industry members known as Mutual’s “Founding Fathers” – Latt Maxcy, Barney Kilgore, C.C. Commander, J.A. Griffin and James C. Morton – Mutual was formed in 1948, and was officially activated on March 25, 1949.
With more than 6,000 grower members, Florida Citrus Mutual’s primary goal was to stabilize prices for growers and to provide previously unpublished price information to members. In the years that followed, Mutual expanded its focus to advocate for growers among state and federal lawmakers.
As the industry has evolved, so has Florida Citrus Mutual. Today, we advocate for nearly 2,000 grower members and work on issues ranging from international trade, pest and disease, legislation, taxation, citrus research to providing reliable market and non-price information.
