Executive to join water panel

Orlando Sentinel – April 3, 2008

PALATKA – Gov. Charlie Crist on Tuesday appointed Douglas C. Bournique, 56, of Vero Beach to a four-year term on the board of the St. Johns River Water Management District.

Bournique is executive vice president of the Indian River Citrus League, a trade association for growers with operations from Volusia to Palm Beach counties.

Some of the most ambitious goals set by the water agency, based in Palatka and responsible for much of the Orlando area, have to do with buying, restoring and protecting lands along the St. Johns River headwaters in Brevard and Indian River counties. That activity has often resulted in negotiations with citrus growers over flood protections, water rights and land values.

Bournique replaces William Kerr, a Melbourne Beach environmental consultant and one of the agency’s most active and outspoken board members.

Also appointed to the board was Hans G. Tanzler III, 56, of Jacksonville. He is president of Marion Equities and replaces Duane Ottenstroer.
